Frozen Fire was the first of my sculptures where I extensively used the internet to build up as complete a picture of my chosen subject as I could find. This horse was foaled in 2005, sired by Montjeu from the dam Flamingo Sea, and went on to win the 2008 Irish Derby. Whether it was the look in his eye, the way he held himself or just his impressive will to win, I just had to try and capture his ‘inner horse’. How to mount the sculpture was slightly tricky: the idea is actually to lose the bronze plate just underneath your lawn so that he just floats there….
